It‘s the new year and everyone‘s talking about financial wellness. What is financial wellness to you?

Making a budget?

Paying off your credit cards?

Having an emergency fund?

The U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) defines financial wellness as “a CONDITION wherein a person: Can fully meet current and ongoing financial obligations, Feels SECURE in their

financial FUTURE, and, is able to make choices that allow them to ENJOY LIFE.

I think most of us want to ENJOY LIFE and feeling financially secure will definitely help you ENJOY LIFE. But what about the financial FUTURE for not only you, but your family?

When you think of your financial FUTURE, do you have a PLAN for what your family will do when you aren‘t around? Are they prepared? Are you?

Part of Financial Wellness is planning for the FUTURE. To make sure you and your family have a SECURE financial FUTURE, you need to have a PLAN and execute the PLAN. I‘m talking about your ESTATE PLAN. Here are 3 steps towards forming a plan:

First, what are your estate planning goals and objectives?

To provide financial security for your family.

To ensure that your property is preserved and passed on to your heirs.

To avoid disputes among family members.

Next, you will need to answer some questions to help your attorney prepare the documents needed to complete your estate plan. Questions like:

Who will get my assets when I die?

Who will be responsible for carrying out my wishes?

Who will manage my financial assets for my family when I‘m not around?

Who will take care of my minor children?

Finally, once you‘ve given thorough thought to your goals and objectives and answered some of those hard to think about questions, you should seek professional counsel from your attorney. Your attorney ¸can draft documents such as a Will, Trust or other financial documents to give you the peace of mind that you and your family‘s financial future is secure and you are on a path of Financial Wellness.
